18+ Responsibility Trustee Position

Description

Broadstairs Town Shed is an award-winning, volunteer-run charity with a big heart and a practical spirit.

It’s a welcoming space for people aged 50+ to come together, make things, share skills and enjoy the satisfaction of hands-on DIY, woodworking and metalwork.

As well as tackling loneliness and isolation, the Shed helps members build confidence, friendships and a stronger connection to the wider community. We work closely with other local organisations and support groups, using our practical skills to support their projects too.

There’s lots of room for new trustees to get involved — whether you bring experience in governance, finance, fundraising, health and safety, community engagement, or just fresh ideas and enthusiasm — all of which help us strengthen and grow what the Shed can offer.

Ensure that Broadstairs Town Shed(BTS) as a project from Broadstairs Town Team (BTT) achieves its objectives as set out in its Articles of Association document (AOA). Trustees must ensure that there is a defined strategy in place and that all assets and resources are only used for the charitable purposes outlined in the AOA. Trustees have both individual and collective responsibility to work together in the best interests of BTS its aims, goals and its beneficiaries.

What rewards come with volunteering, and how does it create meaningful change?

Volunteering with Broadstairs Town Shed comes with rewards that go far beyond giving up a bit of time.

For individuals, it offers a real sense of purpose and belonging. People see the direct results of their efforts — a finished project, a skill passed on, a smile from someone who’s found confidence or companionship again. It boosts well-being, keeps minds and hands active, and helps volunteers feel useful, valued and connected.

For the local community, the Shed becomes a hub of shared skills and mutual support. It has brought people together who might otherwise feel isolated, strengthens friendships across different backgrounds, and creates practical benefits through projects that support other local groups and causes. Volunteers help build a kinder, more connected Broadstairs where people look out for one another.

On a wider level, the Shed shows how grassroots, volunteer-led initiatives can make meaningful change happen here in Thanet.

By tackling loneliness, encouraging lifelong learning and promoting community engagement, it helps  compliment and ease pressure on public services and demonstrates the power of people coming together to support one another. Every hour volunteered helps create a ripple effect — improving lives, strengthening the community, and contributing to a healthier, more connected society.
